  • We have a rather unconventional study area as it is located in a common area, next to the dining and living area. We chose to have our home in this layout to maximise the overall space. To keep the design of the study area consistent with the rest of the house, we chose to have the table laminated in the same laminate - Riviera Viola Noce from Lamitak. We also considered the type of office chair to use in this area, since it is in a highly visible common space. We originally had the super bulky but comfortable Secret Lab chairs (which I used when i lived at my parents home), however these big bulky chairs did not suit the space. So we decided to go with a simpler but still comfortable office chair from IKEA - the HATTEFJÄLL in Gunnared beige/white.

One important aspect to having a clean desk, is ensuring that any unsightly wires are out of sight. That’s why we had our ID help build in these cable management flaps into our study desk. This also meant that electrical wiring needed to be planned for this area right from the beginning. We have 3 cable management flaps across our 1.8m study desk, and each flap includes 2 power socks, so 6 power sockets in total which gives us sufficient charging ports for our laptops, tablets and desk fan. The best thing about the flaps is they keep the ugly cables neatly below the table, out of sight!

It is really important to have sufficient storage space for storing stationery, as well as storing our laptops after we are no longer using them. I like to keep my drawers organised with (clear) plastic organisers that allows me to compartmentalise different types of stationery.

Our study desk is also located right behind the living room sofa, and next to our beverage (coffee and wine) pantry. Therefore, we do not only use this space as our study table, but we also have some of our meals here as well, when we want to watch television. That is why we keep to a clean desk policy, so that we can utilise this space for multiple uses. This means that after the work day ends, I will keep my laptop away and leave the table as empty as possible. It may not be for everyone, but we consciously choose to do things this way, because we want to ensure our home is kept neat and tidy - especially since the study table is in such a highly visible common space.
