Welcome to the heart of Ling House, our open kitchen! While planning out the design of our home in the early stages prior to renovation, we made a decision to knock down all the walls in the living area to integrate both kitchen and living space. Our idea was to have a long kitchen, and an island as the main built-in features of our home. Most of our time is spent here at the island, and the living area, so it was important for us that the island was also functional for hosting, prepping food, and additional storage. We loved the idea of breeze blocks on the sides, reminiscent of ones used for old shophouses, giving it a airy feel. A matte-textured granite top was chosen to complement the walls, but also having a granite top reminded us of traditional stone tables! Behind, we had open shelving installed for easy access to glassware and coasters, which is really convenient when we’re hosting. An electrical socket was also installed here, as we would also use the island to do work and to charge our devices! Having a long kitchen meant that we could have our own corners (coffee for Ronn, food prep for Shu)! This is our coffee corner, where our daily morning routine of making coffee starts. Learning how to use an espresso machine was an incredibly humbling experience which we’re still learning day by day! The long kitchen has always been a dream for us, and we love that we’re also able to display our antiques too! Seeing that this is the only built-in carpentry we have in our home, we wanted to plan out our storage space more efficiently. Having a longer kitchen also meant that we could have more lower cabinetry! For our cabinetry, we chose a Stateroom Eames Teak laminate from Lamitak, and a simple off-white countertop. We went with a teak laminate so that it would match our antique cabinets, and the countertop to match with our textured cream coloured backsplash. Our home has mostly teakwood accents around the house to provide some warmth against our industrial grey walls and cement flooring. 
Initially we were thinking to have cabinetry installed above as well, but we decided against it eventually as we wanted the space to feel open. We went with open shelving instead, and figured that if we ever needed more storage space, we could rethink the decision again in future. For now, this shelving is used to display our favourite antiques we've collected! A real classic Diamond fan and Skippy jar! On the corner, you might recognise the McDonald's Happy Meal toys back from the 1980s to 1990s :) 
These two glass dispensers, used for sesame oil and soy sauce, were from a pop-up craft market in Taipei - we loved how beautifully intricate they were! 
We're big fans of gachapon machines, so here's a little side peek of our fridge and collection of magnets! The magnets of local kuehs and nasi lemak were from a big antique haul from a lady on Carousell. That's it from our Ling House kitchen, folks! Till our next post :)
