In most executive maisonettes, the washer and dryer are typically stationed downstairs, either squeezed into the kitchen or out on the balcony. It’s just the way things are. But we thought—why not shake things up a little? With one clever move (and a little bit of floor plan magic), we’ve created a laundry corner that makes way more sense for our home and daily routine. It’s the laundry area you didn’t see coming, but once you do, you might just be tempted to do the same! Let us walk you through our little space hack!
Since all our bedrooms are upstairs, it just made so much more sense to have our laundry area on Level 2. Dirty clothes go straight from the rooms into the washer, and once they’re fresh and clean, they head right back into their respective wardrobes...no need to lug laundry up and down the stairs! So, how did we pull this off? Let’s dive into the details!
In the original layout of Level 2, the entrance to the common bathroom was positioned directly opposite the top of the stairs, making it the first thing visible upon reaching the landing, as you can see below:
Since we had already planned to transform Common Bedroom 2 (right) into our walk-in wardrobe, with only Common Bedroom 1 (left) being occupied, it made perfect sense to relocate the bathroom entrance into that room, effectively turning it into an ensuite. This change not only enhanced privacy and convenience but also allowed us to maximise the functionality of the space.
After sealing the original bathroom entrance, we were left with the perfect nook to fit our washer and dryer—an efficient use of space that made total sense for our home. This setup works specifically for our household since only one of the common bedrooms will be occupied, and we already have our own bathroom in the master bedroom.
Converting the nook into our laundry area was a perfect solution, as we could easily tap into the common bathroom behind the wall for both the water supply and drainage outlet.
Here’s how our laundry nook is looking now!
We’ve also placed our automated cat litter box here, as we prefer to keep it out of sight in the public areas on level 1 where we host and entertain. Having the litter box in the laundry nook hasn't obstructed any movement when we're doing laundry at all!
As for the automated ceiling laundry rack, we don’t feel the need for it since we rely on our dryer most of the time. We hardly have any clothes or items that can't go in the dryer, and for the few that can’t, we use a foldable rack. These typically dry overnight, and once they're ready, we simply store the rack away.
If you're wondering where we store our laundry essentials, the nook is thankfully spacious enough to fit a slim pull-out rack, which is super handy and keeps everything within reach. We’re also thrilled to have found storage boxes in colours that perfectly match our wash tower! One of them is dedicated to holding our laundry sheets.
This laundry nook has been a total win for us! By shifting things around a bit, we’ve created a space that actually fits our family’s routine. No more hauling laundry up and down the stairs—that’s a victory in itself! The two rooms where clean clothes go back to are right next to the laundry area. Who knew such a small nook could make life so much smoother?
