Merry Christmas everyone!! Hope everyone is enjoying the festive spirit :)
One of the most important considerations we had for our renovations that was cost-related was to not have too many carpentry or fixed items in the house. And that really helped bring down our overall cost of the renovations. The only places that have carpentry are our kitchen cabinets and master bedroom's wardrobe.
So for our living/dining area, we opted to only have loose furniture. This also gave us the flexibility and option to slowly shop for what we truly loved at a better price. One of our best buys of this home is this shoe cabinet from Taobao. We were able to choose the exact design we wanted - which was to have most shoes hidden, but also have an open rack under to have our commonly worn shoes for easy access.
Moving further into our home is the living room. Even with the tight space restrictions, the decision to have only loose furniture here allowed for the tv console to be shifted to have this big Christmas tree in our home!
Our tv console is from hipvan, and it has been great in keeping our nintendo switch games, mahjong tiles and other things hidden away to keep things tidy.
On the other side of our living room is our sofa, which we love and also spent a little more money on. It gives us the flexibility of turning this into a sofa bed (our friend has slept on it before and gave us his thumbs up on comfort). We're able to pull out the seats so we can stretch our legs out, without compromising on space when we need it.
Our dining table is 1.8m long. Our IDs did suggest to us while we were shopping for our dining table, to keep it at 1.6m so that our home wouldn't look too cramp. But I'm glad we decided to stick to 1.8m for more space while we host!
One tip we have is to think about how many guests you would normally host and to also not have too narrow a dining table so that you have more space in the middle to place dishes and decor.
This is the first place in our home that has carpentry - the master bedroom. We spent a really long time discussing with our IDs on the layout of our carpentry in both the master bedroom and kitchen to try and maximise the space while being able to fit what we wanted + cater sufficient space for us to grow into this home.
One of our biggest splurges of this home is to have tiles instead of vinyl. It's extremely debatable on which is better, but we are really glad we went ahead with tiles. Clean up is really easy, even if we were to spill things here and there in the kitchen. And these grey and simple tiles are one of our favourite things that we were happily shopping for!
We also really saved money for our bathroom. Our IDs had initially suggested and did up a render for our master bathroom to have an integrated sink. And while it looked absolutely gorgeous, it came with a hefty price tag of at least $3000. So instead, we found a ready-made sink + cabinet that only cost us $600. It also had the option of having a complete set and adding on to have a mirror cabinet.
Well, that's it for us on cost considerations. Till the next one!
