In our home, we unintentionally came up with a design trick that many guests overlook — the main wardrobe in our house is not located in the master bedroom, but out in plain sight in the common living area right behind the study. At first glance, it might seem like just a feature wall as the wardrobe’s doors are finished with the same wood-style laminate that we’ve used throughout the entire house. Therefore, it is able to blend seamlessly with the rest of the house. Unless you’re looking closely, it’s easy to miss that the wardrobe is there at all.

When designing the custom built wardrobe, we made sure to take a look at the type of clothes we currently owned. For me, I wanted to accommodate longer dresses, so we made sure to configure the wardrobe accordingly to fit my needs. My husband on the other hand wanted something simple and straightforward. He doesn’t own any long clothing items (except winter coats which we keep under our storage bed), therefore he was happy to maximise the space with 2 simple clothes hanging rods.

With the main wardrobe outside in the common area, we were able to maximise the space in the master bedroom to allow for a larger vanity space. However, we could not entirely do away with a wardrobe in the room. We still needed a space to store our pyjamas and other personal items. Therefore, we still had a smaller wardrobe built into the master, next to our master toilet, which would allow us to access home clothing more easily before we wind down for the day.

This placement offers both practicality and style. Not only does it free up space in the master bedroom, but it also turns an often-overlooked area of the home into a surprisingly functional storage solution. The wardrobe’s discreet design brings an unexpected touch of elegance to the living area, making it both a subtle and practical addition to our home. We are so glad we already considered this right from the start when we were planning the layout of the house.
