  • " YOU DO RENO UNTIL NO MONEY INSTALL WINDOWS?!" is a common question we get when people see our service yard (but they sound nicer lah, our guests don't shout at us haha) And yes, we didn't install windows or grilles or anything for our service yard so it's "open concept' that way. But no it's not because we ran out of budget - one thing we noticed about the house when we first viewed it was how breezy the service yard was. The previous owners liked the breeze too so they never installed windows and we decided to keep it that way as well. So far the rain hasn't been a problem because we have a little ledge that keeps most of the rainwater out - unless there's a thunderstorm (during which we bring in the laundry anyway).
  • We didn't do any reno at all for our service yard so we've retained the pipes, the windows and the original BTO aluminium door - here's how it looks like when viewed through the door! We have a washer-dryer stack AND a steigen, which yes, looks like overkill - but hear me out... this means we can wash our clothes and bedsheets at the same time (no more waiting for one to dry first) and it also means we clear our post-holiday laundry within a few hours because we have both the Steigen and dryer running at the same time. The yard doesn't get too hot/stuffy when we do this because of the open concept - all the heat gets dissipated out really fast so that's another benefit of not having windows.

Fun fact about that white wall you see in the yard? It used to look like this LOL. The previous owner stuck some wallpaper thingy on it and that absolutely destroyed the whole wall. Our ID wanted to charge us a few hundred bucks to re-plaster it, but Duck coerced Frog into going onto a wall repair date with her. It took a good... 8 hours? But we managed to scrape off the remnants and replaster the whole wall, with a total cost of about $15 (tools included). The end result is not perfect, but we're pretty happy with it. If you stare closely you can see lots of little bumps and uneveness, but who's going to stare closely at our service yard wall? It was absolutely backbreaking work though - wouldn't recommend it unless you have a strong back and an even stronger marriage. :)
  • On the empty side of our yard, we have our laundry basket(s) - and fun fact, if you get this laundry basket, you can actually hang IKEA Sunnersta boxes along the side (like we did!). They fit perfectly and are great clothes peg holders. We also got this random metal rack from Taobao where we dry items like shoes, rags and recycling items, which we don't want to dry right beside our clothes and intimates on the Steigen for hygiene purposes.
  • On the washer side (or as Duck likes to call it, Laundry Central), we have a magnetic hanger holder that we stuck to the side of our dryer to HANG our HANGERS (geddit?) Our hangers have never been a tangled mess ever since we got these holders - how did we take so many years to discover them! We also have an Ikea trolley that holds all our random cleeaning and household supplies beside the washing machine. The top of the trolley contains our laundry supplies - pods, colour catchers, etc so we don't have to bend down to take them - which is great because our backs have never been the same since we plastered the wall for 8 hours. (Just kidding, we're just lazy people who don't want to bend down) That's all for our super simple service yard!
