Welcome to our living room! This is probably where we spend most of our evenings - watching TV, doing work and just lounging around. Our living room is pretty simple, with no built in or expensive designer furniture, but we put in extra effort to ensure that this space is as functional as it gets. Here are some of the features we implemented:
One thing we're proud of is the fact that our TV wall and TV console have no exposed wires at all! We didn't have the budget to build a false wall and then drill through it to conceal the TV wire, so we opted to have our TV socket installed behind the TV so the plug and wires are hidden behind the TV itself.
This only works because we have a Xiaomi TV that is not exactly "slim" (i.e. it's not flushed to the wall like other models e.g. the Samsung Frame TV) so there's just enough space behind the TV for the plug and the socket.
And don't worry - the gap is wide enough to slide our hand in and turn off the TV whenever we're not using it for extended periods of time.
As for the rest of our wires, we found this TV console on Taobao which comes with an empty "hole" in the back panel. We measured the exact height and dimensions of the "hole" and had our electrician align our sockets exactly to fit.
We have two double sockets here. Two of them are used for our router and diffuser and the other two double up as a charging station for our electronics whenever necessary.
The console also comes with two drawers at the sides where we store said electronics (portable chargers, cameras, etc) so charging is really convenient! We also plug in our iron here so we can iron clothes and watch Netflix at the same time.
We have an L-shaped sofa that houses our sofa community - or what we like to call the motley bunch of completely unrelated and non-aesthetic soft toys we've somehow collected over the course of our relationship. The aesthetics are 100% NOT ALIGNED with the house, but they have some sentimental value... so they're here to stay :)
Our sofa is in charcoal grey to match the house aesthetic and looks really unassuming, but in fact this sofa...
... it's actually a sofa bed! The bottom part of the sofa can be raised to form a queen sized bed to build the ultimate Netflix movie watching experience.
The mechanism is super smooth and the bed can be raised/lowered with just one-hand so we convert our sofa to a bed pretty often. It also doubles up as a guest bed for when we have friends who want to stay over.
The surprises don't stop here! The chaise lounge part of the sofa also comes with storage underneath so this is where we store our board games and extra guest pillows and bedding if anyone wants to sleep over on our sofa.
So if we had to review this sofa (which we got at a steal during a Black Friday sale) - it would definitely be 'sofa, so good' :D
The 'last' secret feature of our living room is our side table! This side table can be used as a side table tucked in all the way to hold drinks and food during movie nights when it's just the two of us (see our previous photos!) so it can be converted to a low coffee table (like in this photo!).
We use this coffee table setting when we have guests over so we can maximise the sofa space while still having somewhere to place our drinks/food.
The last thing about our living room would probably be our curtains and lights. If you've been reading our posts, you'll probably know by now that we were on a tight reno budget and we also love finding ways to save money.
We got our lights from Tampoi Lighting in JB as we just wanted something simple - but we opted to have track lights so that we can have the flexibility of changing our the lights in future if we want to refresh our home.
Fun fact: We actually didn't know this before we started our reno, but most track lights are built for the same kind of track! Which means the canister-shaped lights we have here can be swapped out for different designs and shapes - we have the same track with a bar-shaped light for our kitchen.
Our curtains and curtain track were from Taobao - they were custom made to our exact measurements and cost a fraction of what we would have been charged in Singapore.
Pro-tip: If you want your living room to look like it has a higher ceiling (everyone wants this right?), install your curtain tracks on your ceiling! Not immediately above your window because that draws the line of sight downwards and makes the room smaller somehow.
And that's our living room! We didn't have a lot of budget for this but we tried our best to create that sleeker, built-in furniture look without actually having any built-ins.
One reason why built-in furniture looks good is because of the way it flushes to the walls and looks like it was "built" for the space - we tried to achieve this with our custom curtains (measured exactly by our helpful Taobao seller) so it flushes nicely to the walls and floor without excess), the skirting cut out at our TV console (can you spot it?) as well as the slightly lifted sofa that leans against the wall without being impeded by our skirting.
Here's what our living room looks like on a slightly cosier day where the bed is up and the curtains are closed all ready for movie time.
