Welcome to our really long kitchen!
The kitchen is one of our favourite places to be in and we do spend quite a bit of time here. We really enjoy cooking and hosting so planning how we wanted to use our kitchen space was really important.
There is no segregation between the kitchen and the service yard in the original floor plan and we love it!! This allows for more ventilation, where there is no door to block the wind and light from coming through.
And this is how it looks like from the other direction, where we have our bomb shelter right beside the kitchen entrance.
We prioritised having more countertop space so we gave up access to hang our clothes outside and extend the countertop space all the way!!
Our countertop and backsplash are both Quartz for a more seamless look with minimal maintenance. It has been really easy to clean up after cooking.
This is what you would see at the entrance of our kitchen.
The entrance into the kitchen is rather wide so we needed to customise the kitchen door and we got the guys from SG Glass Experts to do it up for us. It's been helpful to keep the fumes out when we door heavy cooking.
With the intention of having family and friends over often and our own daily cooking, we wanted to have a large fridge to accommodate our food and groceries. B's family also has the exact same fridge and it has been serving them well so we decided to get the exact same one. We love it for its huge capacity and how sleek it looks.
Having a built-in oven was a dream, and we managed to snag a good deal with our dishwasher during a sale. We also knew we were going to get a microwave eventually, so we created an empty space for it above the built-in oven. A lot of homes place their built-in ovens below the hob, but one disadvantage of it is that if you were to cook at the hob and have something baking in the oven, your legs would also be baking with the heat.
And then a few weeks into moving in, a lovely couple from church gifted us our microwave, and it has been great for us to heat up leftovers from our family dinners.
Our hob and hood are both from Mayer, and having an induction was an easy decision since it cooks faster and cleans easily. The power of the induction hob is fantastic, and I only need to have it at power 2 to have it cooking really quick. Our hood is also great at sucking up the fumes and ensuring our clothes on the Steigen don't smell.
We created a lot of countertop space around the hob to have prep space for our massive family cookouts. Even with this much countertop space, every inch still gets taken up when we have guests with plates and casseroles, and all our appliances are our best buddies in getting everyone's tummy filled.
On the opposite side of the kitchen, we keep our commonly used appliances, like the rice cooker and Ninja Foodie, on the countertop.
Both of us are huge fans of soup and the Ninja Foodie has been extremely helpful in preparing soup in both pressure cooker and slow cook mode. Our most adventurous dish in this pot so far has been beef bourguignon, and it was absolutely delish! The best part is that the pot is dishwasher friendly :)
Our rice cooker has been doing its job fine and it was gifted to us by my poly pals. I have absolutely no complaints about this rice cooker.
The plan was to research and get a water dispenser, but realised how expensive they can be. We would also have to allocate space below the water dispenser for the water tank, which reduces the carpentry space for other things. So we decided to just get a kettle and boil it the old school way whenver we need it.
We also realised what a game-changer having a dishwasher was after a meal at our friends' house. No one has to fight over who should help to wash dishes whenever we have guests. And according to B's research, it is cleaner, helps to save water, and it is definitely his favovurite appliance in the kitchen.
Although we have a dishwasher, there are still certain things that need to be handwashed. We initially wanted to have a double sink but decided that a bigger one would fit our needs better if we needed to wash a big pot or wok.
We opted to have a large single sink with a Grohe mixer tap. It allows us to pull down the tap to rinse the entire sink when we're done cooking.
The amount of carpentry space we have is quite massive, but we know we will grow into this home and so will the number of things we own. We chose to have a variety of both drawers and cupboards for different things, which we will elaborate more in a separate post.
Till the next time, byeee!!
