This picture shows how we merged the kitchen together with our service yard to create a seamless space where we can multi task more efficiently. This also allows sunlight and wind to flow through the whole house.
While debating on whether to purchase a dryer or a automated laundry system, we looked at our lifestyle and pros and cons of both the dryer and the automated system:
Dryer:
Pros--
*Read that it does not use up as much electricity as what we thought
*Clothes need not be dependent on the weather to be dried
* We can do more loads of laundry as we do not need to wait for the previous load to dry
* No need to manually hang the clothes up
Cons--
* Have to take it out from washer and move it into the dryer
* Have to sort what can or cannot go into the dryer such as dryfit and exercise wear therefore wasting more braincells and time to think on laundry
* Dryer cycle takes abt an hour? I m not sure abt the exact duration but that means we have to wait for the cycle to end and try to take it out immediately to prevent creases?
* Space constraint in my kitchen or service yard. If I stack my dryer, I will lose the countertop on top of my washer and the stack would block sunlight coming into my kitchen.
Steigen
Pros--
* Used to already hanging up clothes in previous house so arms memorised the action already
*Just hang up everything. No need to think what can or cannot go on
*Has a wind, heat and anti dustmites function that we can activate during wet weather
* It's on the ceiling so save kitchen floor space
Cons--
* When clothes are hung, abit unsightly if there are guests
* Got to hang everything, sometimes not enough space if we do a big load
* Time wasted to hang laundry could be used to do something else more productive?
Anyway, with the pro and con list, we decided that a hung system would be more suitable for our lifestyle and we got our steigen solar ultra in ultramarine colour for a pop of colour in our house.
The steigen poles are extendable so that bedsheets can be hung. but we definitely use those extensions to hang up a full load of laundry.
Sometimes,if there is not enough space on the steigen, we have a clothes rack that we can open and utilise.
So far it has proved to be a lifesaver especially during the wind/heat function during rainy weather. We do not need to monitor the weather before washing clothes and that is a major plus as our family of 5 go through many loads of laundry!
These magic hangers help to save space when hanging the clothes up. it is much easier to take them down as well with a click of a button! A lifesaver in the laundry room for sure!
As a family of 5 who does laundry every 2-3 days, we decided to get a 10.5kg load washing machine from the reputable brand LG. Glad that LG had a gun metal colour version which fitted nicely into our kitchen theme. We had to get a front loader though we had always used top loader due to the kitchen countertop configuration.
Front loaders Pros:
*Cheaper upfront
*No need to bend down to load and unload laundry
*can stop the cycle halfway to add clothes by just lifting the lid.
Cons:
*Uses more energy and water in the long run
Front loaders pros:
*spin faster, extract more water(decreases drying time)
*uses lesser water in one cycle , making it environmentally friendly
*suitable for small yards as you can stack the machines if you are getting a dryer
cons:
*More expensive upfront
*Cannot add additional laundry mid cycle
Our washing machine has remote start functions and can be controlled via an app on our handphones. this helps when we want to do a delayed start on our wash when we are outside and unable to come back to start the machine.
As we were doing Reno, my Id told me that our condo management do not allow installation of window panels at the service yard. For what reason, I have no idea.. however when there is a thunderstorm or wind blowing during a rain storm, my service yard gets puddles of water! I cannot fathom why windows are not allowed... We tried to live without windows panels by putting a magnetic mozzie net hoping it can block the rain but it failed cos the magnet couldn't fight with the strong wind. 😖 So whenever it rained, I wld get worried whether is there a flood at my yard or not.
Therefore we approached our id for an alternative solution. She helped us to install acrylic panels to the window frame through her supplier. Finally a solution to keep the rain out which is a relief! Only con is that now if we want wind from the service yard, we need to open the window which is attached to the invisible grilles.
No regrets hacking away the service door and walls to merge the kitchen together with the service yard. As we placed the washing machine together with our carpentry, this allows the kitchen countertop to be extended as well.
This is the cupboard above the washing machine where all cleaning supplies are stored. To have the supplies so conveniently placed near the washing machine makes the laundry routine more pleasant and easier to carry out.
