Welcome to our light-filled, open-plan home, a 37-year-old executive apartment in the East.
This is our second home, our first being a Built-To-Order that was significantly smaller. With the bigger space, we decided to engage Rooot Studio to help us design the interiors and navigate the peculiarities of an older flat.
We hope that this flat will have enough space for all of us to live harmoniously together for years to come.
This EA has an odd layout originally, with a tight kitchen leading to a dining room tucked at the back, strangely small bathrooms and an overly spacious storeroom. We wanted an open-plan space, so we hacked down all the kitchen walls.
With that, we managed to carve out dining area next to the entryway, put an island in the centre, surrounded by cabinetry on three sides. One of these cabinetry houses the washing machine and dryer. The other, a drinks counter of sorts, mostly for us to brew coffee & make milk for the kids.
We also included a balcony, enlarged the master bathroom, created new storerooms, a study and a playroom.
Our dining room features one of our favourite furniture pieces - the Nexus Dining Table in Oak by Originals Furniture. It can seat six people comfortably, and we love how the family can now gather together during festive occasions here to enjoy a good meal.
Louis Poulsen's statement PH5 lamp casts beautiful light on this table - we centred it to make it a nice contrast against the etheral-looking wallpaper.
Our balcony faces east, so we are rewarded by the morning light every day. This makes it a lovely space for our plants, which we get from our favourite plant shops like The Nursery, Plunt Shop and Homegrown by BNC. Our fave feature is the amazing malt terracotta tiles from Hafary - it really brings us into the outdoors.
The open-plan kitchen of our dreams. We installed the hob and oven from Bertazzoni Modern series, and made cooking easier with a Ninja and Hydroflux Water Dispenser. With an open window and Franke cooker hood, cooking fumes have not been an issue at all. With the kitchen island, it's also spacious enough to cook and host!
Our Master Bedroom is an oasis of calm, featuring colours of oak and sand throughout. It's where we retire for the night to rest and rejuvenate. Oak & Sand's luxury bedsheets are amazing to the touch, and Sealy's Ultimate Plush mattress is super comfy!
Our master bathroom follows the same theme as the master bedroom, in calming neutrals. We love the natural stone mosaic tiles by Appiani, from Hafary - the texture is amazing, and it's antibacterial to boot.
We spend a lot of time in here working, so this is our most cluttered space yet. But it's also where we feel most comfortable. It's all the way at the back of the house, but as our space is open-plan, we can see all the way to the front gate to say hello to whoever's coming home!
We have a dedicated playroom for our kids too. Sandwiched between the kitchen and study, this is where both parents can keep an eye on them while they play. It's a happy, colourful space!
Not many old resale flat layouts offer a dedicated service yard, so we're happy to have this area leading to the common bathroom. It's the perfect spot for our Steigen drying rack! We also added a laundry sink for convenience. The rubbish chute is hidden behind the cabinet.
The star of this common bathroom is the choice of Zellige tiles - we love the glossy finish and the variations in tone. The pink terrazzo sink makes a nice contrast too, we think. And the mixer adds a unique touch - it's a local brand too, and very affordable!
