Hi!! Welcome back to @choishouse!!
We'll be sharing some tips and tricks on how to plan for your kitchen space and our thought processes during our renovation period.
For reference, this was the idea that our IDs planned out for us based on our requirements.
Alright, let's get right to it!
Our top 3 requirements that we told our ID during the space planning phase was
1. We want lots of countertop space and storage
2. We would like to create a "tower" for our built-in oven and the microwave, and have it kept separate from our cooker hob
3. We will need to have space for our washing machine and dishwasher
1) Will you be cooking often?
2) Do you prefer an induction cooker (easier to clean) or a gas stove (wokhey fans would approve)?
3) Do you think it's necessary to have a cooker hood?
4) What type of cooker hood do you want?
5) Does your kitchen have sufficient space to have the oven at a separate location or will you choose to place it directly below the stove area? (We personally chose to have it separately so that it is not so hot when we cook over the induction hob while there is something baking in the oven.)
5) Do you foresee yourself having a lot of different types of sauces and condiments?
6) Do you think you will use or want to be more organised and have a spice rack?
7) If you want to have a spice rack, do you prefer it on the left or right side while you cook?
8) What dimensions do you need for your spice rack - wide vs narrow, equal height on each level or one shorter and one taller height?
9) Do you need a drawer or an area on the countertop to have your cooking utensils?
10) Where do you intend to keep your pots and pans?
11) Drawer vs Cabinet style to keep pots and pans?
12) Will you require a lot of pots and pans? How much space do you need?
13) Would you like the area above the countertop to be empty, with shelves, or cabinets?
14) If you are creating a tower for your kitchen appliances, what will you be placing here? Built-in oven? Microwave? Rice cooker? Ninja Foodi? Thermomix? Kitchenaid?
15) Do you want any pull out drawers for easy access to any of these appliances? Or to let steam escape like when you are using the rice cooker instead of letting it hit against the top of your carpentry?
16) What type of fridge do you want?
17) Will your fridge open on the left or right?
18) Double door fridge?
19) What size of fridge do you want? (For reference, ours is at 528L and it is barely enough especially when we are hosting on multiple days through the weekends.)
20) What type of kitchen appliances will you have?
21) Will you leave these appliances out on the countertop or do you need a space on a shelf or cabinet to store them?
22) How many additional sockets would you require?
23) Kettle or water dispenser?
24) If you are having a water dispenser, is it connected to a water source or do you have to manually top up?
25) If your water dispenser is connected to a water source, do you have sufficient space in the carpentry area to store the tank and pipe connections?
26) Cabinets or drawers to keep cutlery, plates, bowls, containers and more?
27) Will your cutlery drawer be a separate pull out drawer or hidden in one of the drawers for a more seamless look when they are all closed?
28) Soft-closing hinges?
29) Are you ok with paying for Blum hinges at a slightly premium cost?
30) Will you have a dishwasher?
31) Is your dishwasher going to be countertop, freestanding, semi-integrated or built-in? (We personally felt that countertop dishwashers were not ideal as we host relatively often and it would not be able to accommodate the number of items we need to wash, and having a full-sized dishwasher allows us to wash our pots and pans inside too.)
32) Would you prefer to have your dishwasher beside your sink? (We chose to have it beside our sink to reduce drippings if we were to rinse our oilier dishes first and it's also easy to have it just beside the sink.)
33) Do you want to have a top-hung dish drying rack or a stand-alone countertop dish drying rack?
34) What kind of lighting would you have in the kitchen?
35) Will you have task lighting under the cabinets or shelves?
36) What type of sink do you want - granite or stainless steel?
37) Will you want a sink with a lot of features like the cup power rinser function and different types of dispensing water functions such as power mode or stream mode like those seen on taobao?
38) Single or double sink?
39) Mixer with pull-out function to reach and rinse the corners of the sink easily?
40) How will you be keeping your cleaning items under the sink?
41) How do you intend to keep some of your dried food?
42) Will your cabinets have shelves? (We just bought some extra "shelves" to stack more things from IKEA)
45) Will you conceal pipes where they are?
(Our dishwashing tablets and extra sponges are kept here! Super easy to access the dishwashing tablets when they are right beside the dishwasher.)
46) Are you going for an open or closed concept kitchen?
47) If you are having a closed concept kitchen, what kind of doors will you have?
48) If you are having an open concept kitchen, will you have an island or a bar countertop concept?
49) Will you host often?
50) Does your kitchen have enough electrical voltage to manage all the cooking with various kitchen appliances if you host a lot and need to cook a lot of things at the same time?
Well, that's a lot to think about and I hope it has been comprehensive enough to get you started on how to plan the perfect kitchen that is functional and practical.
