Hi everyone! Playing catch-up again with a belated post on @ourcarousellhome. 😊 Like some of you, our estate doesn’t come with a service yard, so we had to get creative with our laundry setup.
We weren’t too keen on installing an automated hanging rack on the ceiling of our small kitchen - it just felt a bit cramped. Plus, after a less-than-ideal experience with a 2-in-1 washer and dryer in our previous home, we knew for sure this time we wanted a separate washer and dryer.
Because ours is a relatively older resale, we have the old-school HDB racks located outside the kitchen window. Honestly, we just couldn’t get on board with the idea of hanging clothes out like this. For one, where would we even lay out the bamboo poles indoors to load the laundry before hauling it outside? It just felt so impractical.
It also made us wonder - did the HDB architect for this BTO estate really think this through? 😅
Since we decided not to use these exterior racks, we came up with a solution that’s working for us very well. We built a countertop over the space and tucked our washer and dryer underneath. Now, this countertop has become one of the most functional spots in our kitchen. From unloading groceries to prepping food and folding laundry, it’s been incredibly handy.
Here’s a quick look at our kitchen as you step inside! On the left, we’ve created what we like to call our “laundry section,” seamlessly integrated with the rest of the kitchen. The dishwasher is tucked neatly just below and beside the sink, keeping everything functional and streamlined.
You might be wondering—where do we store our laundry capsules and other essentials?
We keep our laundry capsules, colour-changing sheets, and laundry bags in the cabinet on the opposite side, to the right. Fun fact: this cabinet was originally meant to house our Wells water dispenser tank. But since we forgot to install a power point below (oops!), we had to make a last-minute change and relocate the tank beneath the sink instead.
Turns out, this little oversight was a blessing in disguise! The cabinet ended up being the perfect spot for our laundry essentials - close, convenient, and very practical.
One of the most common questions we get is: Wow, so you use the washer and dryer for everything? What about bedsheets?
Well, we generally toss them into the dryer too (we know it’s not ideal!). But occasionally, when we’re feeling less lazy, we pull out our extendable laundry rack and make use of the spacious living room to air-dry them. It’s a bit more effort, but it works perfectly well too.
That's all for today's post! What’s your go-to laundry setup if space is tight? Would love to hear from you too! :)
