Hi Communa!
Today I am writing about my home style which is MCM and it feels like I am giving a house tour all over again!
I am not an interior designer but these are based on what I read off the internet and am proud that I designed the house myself!
Husband is a wood person and I love pop of colours so boom here we go!
Vibrant colours, clean lines and simplicity are a few of the many characteristics that define mid-century modern furnitures. Look at all the colour combinations I have in my living room that makes it fun! They're mostly earthy tones and hues!
Mid-century modern home interior design is a style that emerged in the mid-20th century, roughly between the 1940s and 1960s. Sleek lines, minimal ornamentation and seamless blend of form and function characterise the style.
Focusing on moving past the dark years of war in post-World War 2 and embracing the future, designers highlighted functionality and efficiency in mid-century modern furnitures.
Side note: Loving all the legs of the furnitures so my robot vacuum can go under.
Incorporating Life and Outdoors in the indoors!
We have these beautiful pollyanna concepts wall moss and moss clock to accent our living room wall. The aim of mid-century interior is to help reconnect people to nature. That's why adding greenery is vital.
Playing with Opposites!
I added pieces of varying heights, shapes and sizes. Balancing the low lying togo inspired caterpillar sofa with the recliner sofa my husband has chosen. I was surprised to find out that this caterpillar sofa is a iconic mid-century modern piece designed by Michel Ducaroy in 1973 called 'togo', that's why its been called that.
Now adding this piece adds authenticity to my living room!
Choosing vintage accents!
We decided to hung this rattan pendant light for the vintage look and throwback to the retro vibes and goes well with the rattan chairs.
Combining blues and greens is also quintessential for a mid-century modern home.
Two of my favourite colours..! by the way I like red, orange, yellow too! My colour choices are so bright right? I also like pink but maybe not for my house but I don't mind incorporating pink in a nursery if I do have girl baby in the future...
Loving the sleek lines of the wood display shelves/ledges that I bought off from taobao.
Yummy treats I got for my son's 1st year birthday party, fully utilising my 1.8m teak wood table as a dessert table.
Perfect colour palette!
Choosing the right colour scheme is super important for your home, starting from the kitchen!
Blues and greens as mentioned are commonly used for mid-century modern design. We thought long and hard for the wood laminate to match with the correct teal laminate.
When you talk about 'Mid-century modern', everyone just think of a dark woody toned kitchen and that's it.. But do we have other variances? yes!
Tiles backsplash adds a bit of a retro and throwback in mid-century modern homes. We chose large format tiles 1200mm x 600mm with these flower patterns to make the space more cheerful!
I initially wanted small tiles with flower patterns but my husband is worried about the cleaning of grout lines so we went ahead with these tiles instead!
With mid-century modern designs in mind, I forgo the basic HDB tiles in the bathrooms entirely!
The use of natural materials like wood and stone, a focus on natural light, and a focus on indoor outdoor spaces (greeneries), what not to love a mid-century modern bathroom?
The 'stone' is actually my sintered stone that is grey in colour and is actually a travertine stone imitation.
The dark wood tones of the vanity laminate is to create that vintage vanity feel, and we chose this laminate because it looks like natural and super realistic wood!
Close up of my vanity! Look at the wood laminate, my husband chose it and I think it is so chio too!
The natural grains and lines adds personality into our bathroom and it really feels like it is 'outdoor'.
The outdoor that we brought indoor is actually a moss frame and these beautiful leaves tiles that we had a love at first sight back in Soon Bee Huat! You can include other geometric tiles for the midcentury modern look as well. Other options like Terrazzo, subway tiles, printed patterned papers/tiles is also viable for the same MCM theme! So what is MCM exactly? Spruce it up with colourful retro tiles, why not?? Add some rattan details? It's a YES from me!
Created a spa-like feel~
A mix of green wood accents, and an uncluttered view gives this spacious bathroom a midcentury modern feel, we omitted the glass for spaciousness.
My guest room is currently only a queen-sized bed (not shown in the picture), as my mum comes over to sleep often and also this partial glass/wood bookshelf that holds all my reading materials.
The door laminate is a walnut woody tone as well and also all my bedrooms endorsed a beautiful wood tiles flooring from Italy.
Last but not least, I am adding 3 photos that inspired my moodboard before and during renovations! Hope they inspire you to have a mid-century modern house too!
