Dear all, a warm welcome to the_may_hem!!
This is a self-designed home for a couple who is passionate about Scandinavian design. We chose not to have an ID because we knew what we wanted right from the start, after poring over hundreds of Instagram & Pinterest photos.
Hem is a Swedish word for Home. And no prizes for guessing who is the head of the house!
Here is the original floor plan. We did not hack any wall as we needed to use all the rooms. Our plan was a simple one : white walls & wooden floor & just fill the rooms with our favourite Scandi products.
As you enter the house, you will be greeted by this big pendant light from Ikea. This size is currently unavailable in the Singapore stores. On one side of the entryway is our customized Chinese medicine cabinet that is used to keep our shoes.
Found these cute figurines in a little shop at Joo Chiat.
Although we labelled ourselves as Scandi, we're open to any ideas that can blend into the overall look of the home.
We opted for an open plan kitchen even though we cook at least once a week. Thanks to the Fujioh chimney hood, the smooth surface subway tiles & the hardy Dekton worktop, maintenance is kept to a minimum.
A Danish rosewood bedside table in the elderly's room bought from Carousell. We've acquired a few pieces of mid century & antique furniture sourced from overseas & local shops. We prefer to get things that are classic & timeless.
We will be sharing about them in the coming weeks.
We've always liked the look of the flooring in those pictures of Scandinavian homes. So we're thrilled when the opportunity came for us to install one for our own home. This beautiful engineered wood species is called Larch. We love it for the grains & knots.
Similar to the kitchen, we've chosen subway tiles for the common bathroom. It is such a classic look! We're careful with the choice of grout colour though, so that the end result is not too in-your-face.
Nothing too fancy, just the essentials.
We've deliberately gone for loose furniture over built-ins in case there is any need for change in the future. It is also more fun to be able to switch things around. Like when you score a piece of vintage lamp or chair!
We end this tour with a glimpse of the master room. It is our sanctuary within a sanctuary, a place where we say good bye to the world & just be ourselves.
We hope you like what you see. If you wish to see more, please check out & follow my IG @the_may_hem
Take care & we'll meet again!
